With support, older adults and veterans can receive free technical assistance to help reconnect them with loved ones.
Technocademy, a nonprofit organization started by a high school freshman in Atlanta, helps senior citizens and veterans connect with their family and friends by offering free technology lessons throughout the community. The organization has already helped more than 440 seniors through 1-on-1 training and over 100,000 through Operation T-CUP (in which we send out DVDs). You can learn more about Technocademy, Inc. at www.technocademy.org.
Often, by learning basic technologies, older adults are able to reconnect with loved ones. This year, Technoacademy started The Technocademy Pocket Guide. This is a 68-page guide that includes step-by-step tutorials on all basic concepts of technology, including Internet, email, social media, cell phone, and iPhone/iPad. It is a 5” by 7” booklet that has pictures for each step and will be sent out across the country to seniors and veterans for free.
A sample of the guide is available upon request. Relevant organizations are encouraged to distribute these pocket guides to seniors and veterans in their local communities. From the feedback we have received, the guides are very informative, easy to understand, and amazing resources for anyone trying to learn the basics of technology. As these guides are free, we would simply send a certain amount, with which can then be distributed based on how each organizations feels would best work in its local community.
Tips of the Week are sent out every Sunday as a one-page PDF that contains useful tips that anyone can benefit from. You can sign up for these weekly emails and print or show them to seniors and veterans in your community.
Other resources for seniors are availble online. They are an amazing source for seniors who want to have something to learn through the computer. We have many different mediums of learning for veterans to draw in, including: online tutorials/presentations, Exploration Labs (more advanced concepts), the Innovation Factory (personalized learning), and the Cut-Out Center (printable resources that teach technology).
