Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

At the Santa Fe Animal Shelter volunteers work directly with the animals, (socializing and walking dogs, socializing and cuddling cats, assisting in surgery) and with support efforts to get Santa Fe's homeless animal population into forever homes, from assisting adoption staff to assisting cleaning each morning.

Who Will Be Impacted Through This Project: 

We seek to aid the animals in our community as well as provide humane education and pet outreach. Volunteers take their own certified pets, into schools, hospice centers, retirement homes and hospitals. Children read to dogs in our "Reading to Rover" program and we have many youth who work on fund raising in their schools as well as volunteer at the main shelter location.

Nonprofit Will Provide: 

Positive reinforcement, and safety training is provided to any volunteers interacting with the animals. Volunteers get rewards based on hours worked as well as have the potential for rewards based on merit, discounts at our Resale store and refreshments while serving with us at our main sight.

Additional Requirements: 

Volunteers must be 12 years and older, 12-16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who volunteers with them. Because of the training we provide we ask for a commitment of 8 hours a month for six months. Further requirements will be explained at new volunteer orientation and within each department as the volunteer progresses to a field to give their time.
