Albuquerque SANE Collaborative (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners)
To serve sexual assault victims by providing immediate, compassionate, culturally sensitive and comprehensive medical treatment and forensic evaluation by nurse experts.
Victims of sexual assault are provided care in an empowering setting that addresses emotional and medical needs. Care is comprehensive, timely and victim centered. Services are always free and confidential and available 24 hours a day.
At the time of the visit to the SANE unit, victims choose which services they wish to receive from the SANE Program which includes treatment for sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancy, vaccinations, photographs of injuries and evidence collection.
Referrals to other programs are always provided. Reporting to law enforcement is voluntary in most cases. If the victim has reported the crime to law enforcement, the sexual assault nurse examiner is available to testify.
Victims are also offered follow-up care, at any time following their initial exam, by a sexual assault nurse examiner who can support the victim to receive needed follow-up services
