Kids Cook!
The mission of Kids Cook! is to empower elementary age students and their families to improve their overall health by providing hands-on cooking, nutrition and physical activity education.
Kids Cook! has been in Albuquerque area elementary schools since 2001. In July 2009 we became our own 501(c)(3). Kids Cook! promotes the importance of eating real food with variety and moderation, and sitting down together after preparing a meal to enjoy it as a class/family.
Each year, every student is offered 12.5 hours of hands-on nutrition, cooking and physical activity directed by a Kids Cook! Nutrition Educator. Students participate in 8 units, beginning with a Welcome Class; which covers safety and sanitation, Kids Cook! classroom rules, measuring and kitchen tool identification. During the remainder of the year students participate in 3, one hour tasting classes and 4, two hour cooking classes in which they prepare multi-course meals, learn a bit of the history of the area in which the foods originated and take home a workbook that has recipes for repeating meal preparation at home. Kids Cook! is correlated with the New Mexico Common Core Standards.
