Sierra County Humane Society and Desert Haven Animal Refuge
The Sierra County Humane Society is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals and the extension of humane education. Desert Haven Animal Refuge is a no-kill domestic animal sanctuary owned and operated by the society.
The Society has a strong adoption program. We advertize our adoptable companion animals on www.petfinder.com and in the Society's weekly column printed in both local newspapers. Folks interested in adoption can also visit Desert Haven, the Society's no-kill sanctuary, home to dogs and cats available for adoption.
We also have an active adopt-a-pet referral program to help Sierra County folks adopt out an unwanted pet that we are not able to take in at Desert Haven.
Through our comprehensive Spay-neuter program, we distribute rebates to Sierra County residents who need some monetary incentive to have their dog or cat sterilized. Through our Spay-a-stray program, we cover the costs of sterilizing feral cats who have someone to care for them.
Through our Adopt-a-Classroom program, our organization subscribes entire local elementary classrooms to Kind News, an award winning, animal-oriented newspaper that helps teach young school children respect for animals, the environment and each other.
