Mission Statement:

Art in the School's mission is to open the doors to learning for children through the visual arts.

Primary Programs:

1. Volunteer Program: Our unique training workshops prepare parent (and grandparent) volunteers teach art in their children’s classrooms. Art in the School was founded in 1985. The first generation of children to benefit from the program’s early years are now joining as new volunteers in their children's classrooms. Art in the School has published extensive visual art curriculum that provide a framework for instruction. Children learn about art in its cultural context by looking at and discussing works of art, then express their own ideas through art making. The lessons are aligned with state educational standards and benchmarks. Four comprehensive art education lessons are presented each school year.

2. After School Art Program for Title I Elementary Schools: This program is provided at no cost to the children or the schools. Developed in collaboration with the University of New Mexico’s Art Education Program faculty and Albuquerque Public Schools' Fine Arts staff, the program employs UNM Art Education graduate students to teach the program. The curriculum includes looking at and discussing art images, then making artwork in a wide range of media and cultures: drawing, painting, clay work, tessellations (after M.C. Escher), Hispanic tin work, Mayan clay puppets, African masks, Japanese fish prints (gyotaku), modern painting, and Navajo weaving.

3. Professional Development for Teachers: provides instruction on how to integrate art across the curriculum.
