Southwest Learning Centers, Inc.
Southwest Learning Centers (SWLC) was incorporated in New Mexico in 1973 as an educational non-profit resource to serve the multicultural population of the Southwest. The organization’s primary areas of focus include multicultural education, community development and native arts & cultures. SWLC supports practical, community-based solutions for a sustainable Southwest.
Cultural research & education programs (including career preparation) within communities are key to SWLC achieving broad outreach. This includes documentation and archive creation related to the integration of regional community, culture, economy and the environment. These resources are made available to communities and non-profit organizations. Some of these educational materials (including a book series on Native American artists) have been published and/or made available online.
Southwest Learning Centers has conducted or facilitated conferences, workshops, community service projects and special events such as a Native American performing arts festival. The organization has conducted sustainable agricultural research and development projects, and won an award from the United Nations Environment Programme for a heritage seed preservation project. SWLC has also been an incubator for a number of programs that have spun-off to become their own non-profit organizations.
