Railyard Park Conservancy
To provide community stewardship and advocacy for the horticultural care, educational programming, and public art in the Railyard Park and Plaza.
The Railyard Park Conservancy facilitates three volunteer programs in order to provide the horticultural care & maintenance of the cultivated gardens & landscapes in the Railyard Park &, as of 2019, also at the St.Francis Acequia Underpass. Yardmasters are the volunteer gardening group for adults that meet weekly on a drop-in-basis. The second program provides Youth-In-Service opportunities for local youth. The Conservancy also facilitates large groups for one-time volunteer sessions in the park - such as church groups or corporate offices. A volunteer Horticultural Advisory Committee advises the Conservancy on the care of the gardens & landscape.
The Railyard Park Conservancy provides educational field trips for any school or youth group free-of-cost. The focus of field trips are designed to increase science literacy through hands-on, experiential activities. The Railyard Park Conservancy also acts as a liaison to teachers wanting to plug into the Railyard Park for educational opportunities such as, maintaining the compost pile, practicing botanical drawing, adopting a garden, monitoring plants, etc. During the summer, the Conservancy also offers Sand Play Saturday, a nature-based play program for toddlers and their families in the Children's Play Area. The Community Horticultural Workshop Series is offered during the spring and summer on Saturday mornings with topic including: fruit tree pruning, xeric gardening practices, water conservation, pest management, with other topics like mushrooms native to NM, and native bee and bat habitats. The Railyard Art Committee juries public art installations for temporary installation in the Park.
