Mission Statement:

The New Mexico Women’s Justice Project, Inc. (NMWJP), located in Albuquerque, is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate a broad range of systemic barriers to social, economic and political justice faced by women, girls and their families in NM.

Primary Programs:

Our goal is to systemically address the lack of awareness about unique conditions that propel women and girls into the criminal, delinquency, abuse and neglect, and justice systems and keep them trapped there.

Our objectives are to create prison and reentry systems that empower positive functioning; promote gender responsiveness; reduce prison as a place for women who need treatment by promoting alternatives to incarceration; create civic dialogue to eliminate barriers to housing, education and workforce for those with criminal convictions.

Through research, education, and direct action for change, the NMWJP promotes policy development that will enhance lives while maintaining families and protecting our communities for women and girls whose lives have been affected by poverty, addiction, mental illness, and the trauma of physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

When women and girls can support themselves and feel a part of society instead of apart from society, the chances of their returning to their criminal path is lessened. NMWJP is the only advocacy arm and voice for these marginalized women and with financial support we can create systemic change through grassroots advocacy coupled with research into national best practices.
