Sanctuary Zone
To provide a safe haven for survivors of domestic violence and abuse in and beyond Torrance County; to create a zone of healing; and to offer opportunities for recovery and growth that will enable people to make self-enhancing choices and break the cycle of violence and dependency.
Sanctuary Zone’s programs consist of Safe Zone Home, Job Training, and the Gift Zone Thrift Shoppe.
Safe Zone Home (SZH) Located on 5 acres of rural land, SZH will be the first/only domestic violence shelter in Torrance County. It will serve as a short-term safe haven and a long-term (90 day) residential sanctuary for adult victims and child victim/witnesses of domestic violence.In partnership with the Torrance County (TC) Project Office, the TC Domestic Violence Program, and the TC Counseling Center, SZH will be able to offer or refer clients to the following services: crisis intervention, safety planning, individual short-term and long-term goal planning, legal assistance, Empowerment classes, assistance in getting orders of protection, transportation, job training, and more. Safe Zone Home is slated to open in Feb. 2011.
Job Training Sanctuary Zone partners with Goodwill, NM Workforce Connection, and TANF to provide a nurturing environment for people in need of job training. Trainees have the opportunity to learn retail management (sorting, stocking, and selling) and a variety of other administrative tasks. Sanctuary Zone provides free computer classes for all job trainees who are interested.
Gift Zone Thrift Shoppe The Gift Zone Thrift Shoppe is located in the Sanctuary Zone building. The Gift Zone serves as a funding source for Sanctuary Zone and a location for job trainees assigned by Goodwill, TANF, and NM Workforce Connection.
