Two Volunteers Honored for their Contributions to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

Albuquerque, NM – The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is pleased to honor Ms. Rana Chan as the recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Student Volunteer Award, and Mr. Terry Leighley as the recipient of the 2013 Maydew-Jeblick Award.  The awards were given last night at the Museum’s annual Holiday Volunteer Dinner.

Chan is a senior at La Cueva High School, and participates as a volunteer Camp Counselor in the Museum’s Science is Everywhere Summer Camp program and as a Junior Docent in the Science a la Carte program.  Chan has shown leadership in both positions, acting as both as a superb role model for campers and as a peer trainer for other volunteers.

As a Junior Docent, Chan is considered “an expert in her field” says Patti Martinez, Education Enrichment Coordinator.  “Rana knows how to do every [Carte] demonstration and does all of them with expertise, great science information, and super audience appeal.”

The Outstanding Student Volunteer Award is presented to one individual who has made a lasting impact on the Museum through their volunteer service while enrolled in a high school or post-secondary institution.  Students are nominated for the award by Museum Staff members, and the award is given based on a set of criteria which include: Impact & Breadth of Service, Interest in Science or Education, and Consistency of Commitment.  2013 is the first year the Museum has presented this award.

Leighley, recipient of the 2013 Maydew-Jeblick Award, has been a volunteer since early 2012.  During his tenure, he has participated in a variety of volunteer projects – large and small – that have had a positive impact on the Museum.  Leighley serves primarily as a Museum Docent and as a member of the Museum’s Exhibit Restoration Team.  Last summer Leighley, acting as co-leader, led a team of volunteer in restoring the Bomarc  missile in the Museum’s Heritage Park.  He also actively assists in presenting education program.  However, one of Leighley’s biggest contributions to the Museum is his positive attitude and passion for interacting directly with the public and igniting the interests of Museum visitors.

Since 2001, the Maydew-Jeblick Award has been presented to one individual in recognition of their outstanding volunteer service.  The award honors the memory of two past volunteers, Randall C. Maydew and Harold Jeblick, and is awarded by Museum Staff members using a set of criteria which includes: Impact & Breadth of Service, Public Support & Promotion of the Museum, Resources Leveraged, and Consistency of Commitment & Duration of Service.
