[Albuquerque, N.M.] – The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education and the city of Albuquerque, in cooperation with several public and private organizations, are sponsoring a school supply drive this weekend, Aug. 3-5, during the tax-free holiday. Shoppers are encouraged to pick up a few extra school supplies while taking advantage of the weekend's bargains and donate them to the district's neediest students.
The supplies can be dropped off at the three local Ford dealerships:
Bob Turner's Ford, 1101 Montano Road NE
Rich Ford, 8601 Lomas Blvd. NE and
Don Chalmers Ford, 2500 Rio Rancho Dr.
"It's going to be hard for some families to send their children back to the classroom with the school supplies they need, so we're encouraging the public to `stuff the bus' with pencils, notebooks, crayons and other supplies," said APS Board of Education President Paula Maes.
A bus will collect the school supplies next week and deliver them to APS schools, which will get them to students in need. The Corporate Volunteer Council of Central New Mexico representing several corporations will be collecting school supplies as well. In addition, Cumulus Media Inc. and Clear Channel have donated air time to help get the word out.
