Grants are one method that nonprofits can use to diversify their funding sources. Writing a grant proposal is a way to inform grantmakers (family or community foundations, state, federal or corporations) about your work and its impact in the community. It is also the process for requesting funding.
The Center receives a lot of requests for grant writing training and we have Developing Your Grant Writing Strategy coming up on the afternoon of November 14. Grant Writing USA has a two-day training coming up on November 7 and 8. The Grantsmanship Center has a five-day training scheduled for February 10-14, 2014.
What's the difference between all of these workshops?
- Developing Your Grant Writing Strategy will give you the teach you how to create a plan of action for each grant you intend to pursue. Believe it or not, writing as many applications as you can and hoping that you get something is not the best plan of action. You will learn how to research grantmakers and about the importance of developing a relationship with the funder. Having a strategy will help you to position your proposal so it has the best chance of success.
- Grant Writing USA will be two full days, covering the components of a needs statement; how to overcome the subjective nature of the method chosen (i.e., program) to address the need; planning the grant evaluation; and developing a grant budget. It also includes how to find grants, how to examine and understand an RFP (request for proposal) and more.
- The Grantsmanship Center is a five-day training that not only covers the components of grant writing, but includes exercises for working on grant proposals and getting feedback. You will learn from others' examples and refine your own proposal.
How do you choose which training to attend?
Consider time and money and what your needs are. If your organization doesn't have an annual plan for grants, or if you don't know where to begin with grant research, then come to Developing Your Grant Writing Strategy.
If you know which grants you are going to apply for when, but want to dig deeper into understanding the components of the grant proposals, then consider either Grant Writing USA or the Grantsmanship Center. There are no bad choices.
