Grantmaking Program Area Descriptions:
Child Welfare/Permanence: The Foundation is addressing the challenges in the child welfare system to ensure that all children, regardless of age, race, culture, national origin, sexual orientation, special need or complex circumstances, have lifelong connections to a caring, nurturing family.
Community Change: The Foundation is fully invested in building better futures for millions of disadvantaged children in tough neighborhoods -- areas where poverty is concentrated, crime is common, safety is elusive, and essential services are unreliable.
Economic Security: Improving the lives of disadvantaged children requires a combination of strategies designed to strengthen families and neighborhoods. Ensuring family economic security is an important part of this approach.
Education: Education investments have two primary aims: 1) to support initiatives that give more low-income parents the opportunity to send their children to high quality schools that produce strong results, and 2) to help families get needed services and support through stronger connections between schools and communities.
Juvenile Justice: The juvenile justice reform agenda is designed to improve the odds that delinquent youth can make successful transitions to adulthood, primarily by reforming juvenile justice system so that they lock up fewer youth, rely more on proven, family-focused interventions, and create opportunities for positive youth development.
Type of Funding/ Funding Restrictions: The grant making of the Foundation is limited to initiatives that have significant potential to demonstrate innovative policy, service delivery, and community supports for disadvantaged children and families. The Foundation’s approach to grant making focuses on making multi-year, multi-site commitments that enable it to invest in long-term strategies and partnerships that strengthen families and communities. The Foundation does not seek, nor often fund, unsolicited grant applications. However, in any given year, it may have limited resources to fund additional, unsolicited proposals. Please note that the Foundation does not make grants to individuals, nor does it provide grants for capital improvement projects, medical research or work outside the United States.
