Description

Congratulations on becoming a nonprofit board member! As part of your role, you will be involved in philanthropic activities for your nonprofit organization.  Through group exercises, you will learn that it is more to fundraising than asking for money. You will discover where funding comes from and how to become engaged in the fundraising cycle as a board member while understanding your partnership within the organization. As a board member, you will leave the session feeling much more confident about your role and what it means to be involved in philanthropy.

Patti Ward, CFRE, is a consultant with over 25 years of experience working with nonprofits. As a Certified Fund Raising Executive, she has worked with all sizes of nonprofits in a variety of sectors, including faith-based, education, arts, health-related, and human services. She empowers nonprofits to deliver their mission in a bigger and better way and has successfully assisted organizations in implementing capital and endowment campaigns ranging from $1 million to $8 million.

Guiding Practices for Nonprofits

• Boards of Directors should actively raise financial contributions from external sources.
• Boards of Directors should personally make annual financial contributions to the organization.
• Boards of Directors should actively develop strong, positive connections within the relevant community on behalf of the organization.
• Boards of Directors should be well-informed about the organization’s mission, programs and finances in order to actively participate in decision-making and effectively champion the organization publicly.
• Nonprofit leadership and all development employees should adhere to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethical Principles and Standards.
• Boards of Directors should develop a clearly defined, written gift acceptance policy that defines conditions under which financial contributions or in-kind gifts would be declined for purposes outside the scope of the organization’s mission.
• Boards of Directors should develop a clearly defined, written policy that protects donor information.
