New Site Helps Nonprofits Increase In-Kind Donations

TheGivingEffect.com is a new website that helps nonprofits easily catalog things they need and connects donors with the causes they care most about. It is the first website to help nonprofits collect donations of items and food (also known as "in-kind donations").

New Mexico nonprofits are encouraged to sign up and share their needs with prospective donors.

Most of us live in a word of excess: unneeded clothes, books, shoes, electronics, toys, and more. At the same time, there are people all around us whose lives could be improved by the simple gift of something we can spare. The Giving Effect connects these groups with the efficiency of the Internet, allowing anyone to change lives by donating something they no longer need.

Donors give in the way most convenient for them, whether it's arranging for a pickup from their home or office, dropping off something at a location nearby, or by mail. In addition to supporting the causes they care most about, donors get a personal 'thank you' and a receipt for tax purposes, and they get to see the ongoing impact of their donations.

Nonprofits gain by exposing their needs to a wider audience of potential donors. The site also provides nonprofits with tools they can use to promote their message, the ability to create tax deductible receipts online, and the opportunity to reduce storage and distribution costs by having items go directly from donors to recipients.

The Giving Effect launched June 1st, and it is already working with causes across the country including:

- Chef David's Kidz Wishgrant Foundation (http://chef-davids-kids-wishgrant-foundation.thegivingeffect.com), a national organization that collects toys, books, dolls and more for terminally ill children.

- Early Head Start on Long Island (http://huntington-new-york-early-head-start.thegivingeffect.com), which is collecting food, clothes, books and more for underprivileged families.

- Crossing the Finish Line (http://crossingthefinishline.thegivingeffect.com), a Pennsylvania organization that helps young adults deal with cancer and is collecting small tokens of comfort.

"Our goal is to make donating items and food more social and fulfilling than dropping things in a parking lot collection bin," says Mitchell Silverman, Co-Founder and CEO of The Giving Effect. "There are nonprofits in every community across the country that would love to get things the rest of us are done with, yet most people don't know the groups need these items. I'm excited to put donors in touch with causes they care about and to create a new wave of donations across the country."
