Community-Based Evaluation: Making Evaluation Fit Your Program

This is a two-part training series. The first part of this training will take place on April 17 from 9am-12pm and the second part will be on May 8 from 9am-11am.

- Learn how to organize your evaluation process for continual program improvement
- Identify how to engage the community you serve in the evaluation process
- Develop a needs assessment or evaluation plan for one of your projects
Description
These trainings utilize a model that understands evaluation as a useful tool to support an organization's work, rather than solely something required by funders. This model recognizes that effective evaluation must be based on community values and experience. Additionally, this model recognizes that evaluation is easier and less onerous when it builds on the types of assessment that are used on a daily basis to determine if things are running well and what needs to be adjusted.
Session 1
During the first session participants will have an opportunity to brush up on evaluation basics, examine their organization's current evaluation process, and consider how evaluation is informed by community culture and values. Participants will leave this training with an understanding of how to record and build on the types of data that are already being gathered in order to develop a deep and robust evaluation.
After the first session, participants will have time to start constructing a plan of how to use this evaluation model in their work.
Session 2
The second session will provide an opportunity for participants to share, discuss and refine their evaluation plans.

Presenter
Robert Sturm has been working in the nonprofit sector and philanthropy for 25 years. During that time he has worked with a wide range of marginalized and stigmatized populations on projects involving traditional art and culture, health promotion and disease prevention, equity and inclusion, community based evaluation and planning, and values based management and programming. As Executive Director of the NM Community AIDS Partnership, Robert has collaborated with partners around the state to develop culturally sensitive HIV programming. As a partner in Indigenous Methods, he works with Native American groups to develop culturally appropriate, community-based tools for needs assessment, program planning, and program evaluation.
